Former NXT Champions Work Dark Match Ahead Of Tonight’s Smackdown

January 7, 2022 0 By Tim Jarrell

Two former top champions in NXT worked tonight.

We have seen over the last six months or so since WWE returned to the road that they have had many NXT talent work dark matches ahead of RAW and Smackdown. We had seen the likes of Raquel Gonzalez, Dakota Kai, Xia Li, Kyle O’Reilly, Johnny Gargano, and other all work matches. Tonight, two former champions worked against one another.

Tonight Smackdown is in Uncasville, Connecticut and before the show went on the air there was a dark match that saw former NXT Champion Tommaso Ciampa face off against former NXT UK Champion Pete Dunne. One fan in attendance stated that the match was great and Ciampa came out victorious.

This past Tuesday night on NXT, we saw Ciampa drop the NXT Championship to Bron Breaker. Ciampa would then shortly after the match send out a tweet thanking NXT. Many online felt like that could have been his goodbye to the NXT roster and this here tonight could further grow those thoughts.

When it comes to Pete Dunne, he has been feuding with Tony D’Angelo since WarGames and has a match on NXT next week. The match itself will be a crowbar on a pole match and now after seeing Dunne get a look on the main roster tonight, could that match against D’Angelo be a send off match for Dunne in NXT.

We will to follow this story more and if we hear anything else on Ciampa and Dunne working a match before Smackdown tonight, we will have it here and on the PWUnlimited YouTube Channel.
