Reason AEW Is Not Using Bash At The Beach & Why It Has To Do With Cody Rhodes’ Name
January 29, 2021Cody made an interesting deal to get his last name back from WWE.
Last year we saw All Elite Wrestling run a special edition of Dynamited title ‘Bash At The Beach’ and there were many questions regarding that name. Many thought that WWE owned the name and that was not the case. In early 2019 Cody Rhodes trademarked pay-per-view names that were actually created over 20-30 years ago by his father Duty Rhodes. Cody trademarked names like Slamboree, Battlebowl, Bash At The Beach, and others and WWE was not happy about that.
Back in November news came out that Cody got the right to use the Rhodes name again in pro wrestling. Cody had stated that he got the name back but didn’t feel like he actually wanted to use it. Now we have some more information on how Cody got his last name back.
When asked about AEW not using Bash at the Beach this year, Mike Johnson of PWInsider stated that they could not Cause Cody does not have the trademark anymore. Apparently in getting the Cody Rhodes name from WWE Cody had to abandon multiple trademarks he filed back in 2019. Cody abandoned the trademarks on the following,
- Bash At The Beach (abandoned on 12/22/20)
- Slamboree (abandoned on 11/18/20)
- The Match Beyond (abandoned on 11/18/20)
- Superbrawl (abandoned on 10/30/20)
- Bunkhouse Stampede (abandoned on 10/30/20)
- Battlebowl (abandoned on 10/30/20)
As far as Cody saying he did not want to use the ‘Rhodes’ last name but then started using it a week or two later, Johnson states that was Tony Khan’s doing. He stated that Khan wanted to use it in AEW and felt that was the right way to go.
