Major Change To NXT Championship
January 23, 2020WWE looks to be removing gender labels starting in NXT.
For as long as we can remember WWE made a point to let us know which divsion and championships were for men and which were for the women. The women used to be called ‘Divas’ where men were called ‘Superstars.’ Back in 2016 WWE dropped the Divas label and said all wrestlers in the company would simply be called Superstars. Yet the championships held by women still had the ‘Women’s’ label attached to them where no championship was labeled ‘Men’s’ championships. Now it looks like that is ending as well.
According to a report from Mike Johnson of PWInsider, Johnson reports that an internal decree was issued that going forward the NXT Women’s Championship will be referred to as simply the NXT Championship. This decision was made to remove gender-specific designations of the championships.
If you watched WWE Backstage this past Tuesday night you would have seen Becky Lynch indirectly hint at this. Lynch stated that the division doesn’t need a label, it doesn’t have to be called the women’s division and just call it all as it is, wrestling.
On last night’s NXT, lead commentator Mauro Ranallo did refer to Rhea Ripley as simply NXT Champion. Making this change in NXT is only the beginning and there is no word when and if this change will be made on the main roster. If so what do you call the champions? The RAW and Smackdown Champion? Do they get rebranded as World and or Universal Championships? With this move, there are so many questions to be answered.
