Cody On A Working Relationship Between AEW & New Japan
January 8, 2020Cody sounds optimistic that things could work out with AEW & New Japan.
This past weekend this big talk was all about Wrestle Kingdom, but with that as a possible working relationship between New Japan Pro Wrestling and All Elite Wrestling. Chris Jericho took on Hiroshi Tanahashi and even put a shot at the AEW World Championship on the line. After winning his match, Jericho talked about how the two sides working together would be best for business and big money.
Nick Jackson did an interview with ESPN West Palm and stated that “the door has not opened at all.”
Cody talked about the situation as well with The New York Post talking about possibly working with New Japan Pro Wrestling.
“I think the thing that was strange to me was people were asking for this partnership. I don’t know what a partnership would look like other than what you saw. Chris Jericho was part of one of the main events of Wrestle Kingdom, Jon Moxley as well. They both were successful.
So more likely what a partnership would look like is perhaps some sharing of talent, some shared creative, but we’re not going to do a Super Clash III where Kerry Von Erich and Jerry Lawler are fighting over the title. Sorry, that’s a real specific angle I brought up. I’m always hesitant to combine banners versus just respecting each other’s banners. But I like how it’s referred to as the forbidden door. I don’t really think it’s forbidden at all. Like I said, many people have the exemption to work there. They put on a great Wrestle Kingdom. They have some amazing talent, particularly Will Ospreay. He’s a top-five wrestler in the world right now. So, we’ll see where that goes. I know everyone pretty much feels the same about it. I think it’s something in the next year that we will hopefully all explore. We’ll explore on our end, they’ll explore on their end and we’ll see if it works.”
As of right now, it looks like there are no plans for the two sides to work together right now. Chris Jericho has expressed doing more with New Japan and Moxley is still their United States Champion. Again the thing to remember with those two is that they have a separate deal with New Japan that has nothing to do with their AEW deals. So if you think that means they are working together, they are not, right now.
