Backstage Update On Io Shirai’s Status With WWE

Could the former NXt Champion stay with WWE?

Over the last few weeks, there have been reports circulating that Io Shirai may be leaving WWE in August. The word has been that her current contract with WWE is up next month and she is wanting to go back to Japan. Since those reports started Shirai herself sent out a tweet that simply stated “Rumors” with a throwing-up emoji. Now we have an update on her status with WWE. 

According to Dave Meltzer in the Observer Newsletter, Meltzer reported as of last week Shirai still had not signed a new contract with the company. He noted that an offer is on the table and her current deal hasn’t expired yet. Shirai has been out with an injury for the last few months but Meltzer also made note has she has been back training recently at the Performance Center.

All indications are that her current deal with WWE is set to expire sometime in August with no new deal being signed yet for her to remain with the company. It is also not known if she wants to stay with WWE or not as there have been no indications other than some feeling that she may want to return to Japan.
